TIMBER FRAMING SERVICES

We have always tried to honor the craft we practice.  We think of it as our art form and keep vigilant reverence for the artisans that came before us.  Much of the modern timber framing that one sees today is a generic copy of what came before, unfortunately these frames are also missing the sole of their forbearers.

Our clients are provided a complete range of timber framing options.  We are specialized in the Eastern styles of timber framing and building methods, but unlike European methodologies of framing, the styles we practice are progenitors, adaptable to contemporary architecture or ancient., European or Eastern.

There are many new companies aware of the financial viability of timber framing and the high market price some can generate. In such, large machines have been created to mass-produce frames, toting “consistent quality,” “speed of execution,” and “better joinery.”  All statements which are challengeable if not flatly false.  These companies are more concerned with production to sales ratios and are driven to fast turnover, just to satiate the demands of the machine.  Many of these companies do not have the historical or design backgrounds to warrant the pricing they ask for their frames.

We are not purest, and do use modern machinery. However, these machines are base on traditional tools and all frames will be finished by hand tools only, not machine.  Our building practices allow us the flexibility of never having to check our frames or their joinery.  We can have two different members of our group in two completely different locations forming separate halves of the same joint for a frame and when the elements come together they will fit flawlessly, no matter their complexity.  (Any that wish to experience this may contact us for a three year apprentice program.)

We have not found another company that has worked in more wood species than our group.  We have frames that may contain more the twenty species in just the frame alone, not including trim, flooring  and the like.  We often, (always on highly complex frames,) select individual trees from one of our source forest to go into our work.  Selecting, harvesting and milling the trees to our specific needs is done by us and seldom contracted out of the group of artisans we work with.  We can and will use your forest as a source of your frame if it is cost effective, the forest is sustainably managed, and we choose the wood ourselves.

We respect craftsmanship  and people dedicated to replicating the elements of the past.  Some craftsman take their work to a much higher level of skill, complexity and knowledge; these are Master Artisans of their craft, we have made these the standards we strive for.
