TIMBER FRAME BENEFITSWe could give many reasons for employing a timber structures system, but will only discuss some of the primary reasons here. Besides the historical evidence to the burden these frames can withstand, they simply and clearly are stronger than the standard fare for building walls and roofs, matching in strength, with better balance to the foundation. The connection system, (joinery,) is far superior to stick framing, excelling once again in strength, as well as, aesthetic attraction. In some assertions, steel framework is considered stronger and has the added benefit of being fire proof. However this clam is highly misleading, in as such, the manufacture is comparing their product to stick framing not timber framing and not considering that the “fire load” of a structure often starts with the content of the building and the temperature generated will far exceed what the steel can withstand before it buckles. There have been many cases of old timbered warehouses with steel frames added to upper floors that collapse in fires and draped across the timbers afterward, often with the timber structure being salvageable after the steel has been cleaned away.
